Sometimes doing a work of mercy is as transforming for the doer as it is helpful for the receiver. Sometimes, a person just feels the need to put something personal into their offer of help. These are often behind the many charities helped by crafters, who make caps, and clothes, and even blankets and other items for those in need.

One of these groups is Afghans for Afghans.

Afghans for Afghans is a humanitarian and educational people-to-people project that sends hand-knit and crocheted blankets and garments to the beleaguered people of Afghanistan. This grassroots effort is inspired by Red Cross volunteers who made afghans, socks, slippers, and other items for soldiers and refugees during World Wars I and II and at other times of crisis and need. Besides making handmade garments and blankets for the people there, they help spread awareness of the plight of the people of Afghanistan, and give the donors a chance to do something personal that might help the life of a person in need.
