In 1899, a dear Swiss Catholic by the name of Miss Frieda Folger dedicated her life to the service of the Capuchin-Franciscan foreign missions and established
the Seraphic Mass Association (SMA).

Miss Folger conceived the idea of forming an Association whose members would donate alms for the upkeep of the missions. In return for their support, they would share in the Masses and prayers of the Capuchin Order. Members and promoters of the SMA, whom we call "Pen-Pals," are asked to support the missions with their prayers as well as with donations and enrollments in the SMA. Given the change in time zones throughout the world, it can be said without exaggeration that somewhere in the world, missionaries and pen-pals are praying for the missions and for all who are members and promoters of the SMA every day.

One great American role model in learning about the works of mercy is Dorothy Day. I like this quote from her: "How can we say to these people, "Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven," when we are living comfortably in a warm house, sitting down to a good table, decently clothed?" It's something indeed we need to think about, and not just think about, but take some action on.

One place you can make concrete differences with is with an organization called Warming Families.

Warming Families, a project of the One Heart Foundation, is a 100% volunteer project that delivers blankets and other warm items to the homeless and displaced while strengthening families through charity work. At the heart of this project are Area Volunteers who function to coordinate efforts and locate and supply local shelters and nursing homes.
