This series of books by Sally Queen is a wonderful help for those struggling to find fabrics to use for authentic garments.  There is one for Colonial era clothing, one for the first half of the 19th century and one for the second half.  A must have!

Written by the curator of Colonial Williamsburg, illustrated profusely, and the book discusses the nature of history and clothing, with plently of historical tidbits.

This book is written like it was a series of letters from someone from the past to the present.  It discusses many aspects of how to do a mid-18th century reenacting impression, how to make clothes, what sort of gear a person would have, types of dishes, foodstuffs and other things.  Good book for someone starting out in this period.
