Costuming and
Historical
Clothing Links General Fashion Reference Sites The Costumer's Manifesto Milieux. http://www.milieux.com/costume/ La Coutuiere ParisianThis is one of the best sites on the internet for serious historical costuming research. She starts her collection in the late 1400s, includes photos of artwork, and real garments, has how-tos and some period patterns, especially some victorian ones from German fashion magazines (these are scanned copies of tailor type patterns that you enlarge yourself). The site is in English and German. A great place to visit! The History of Costume By Braun & Schneider - c.1861-1880 This is neat - a major victorian era costume history book
that
has been put online. Shows you fashions from a victorian perspective. http://www.siue.edu/COSTUMES/history.html Children's Clothing Historical Boy's Clothing Finding good info out about children's clothing can be difficult. But there is a great site out there about boy's clothing, called, interestingly enough, Historical Boys's Clothing. This is not just a links site, but a study in boy's clothing over a wide period, especially Victorian. http://histclo.hispeed.com/intro.html Historical Girl's ClothingThe Historical Boy's Clothing Site has added some stuff on girls clothing as well.
http://histclo.hispeed.com/girl/girl.html
This site is called Dressing Baby 1850s Style. She has links
to
illustrations from fashion magazines of the era that describe various
infant
garments and how they should be made. Pre-1700 Clothing of the Ancient Celts: A guide to Celtic Costume This site discusses early celtic clothing and culture, with perhaps a bias toward the Irish Celts. Includes things such as bibliography stuff, patterns and other useful info. http://www.reconstructinghistory.com/celtic/intro.html The Evolution of the Kilt This site contains a history of Scots national dress from
early
times on. The first page discusses Scottish dress before 1600. There
are
other pages that discuss how the kilt began, and how it was worn,
women's
dress and other topics. Neat for those who are interested in Scottish
reenacting, especially. http://www.reconstructinghistory.com/scottish/kilts.html Baroque Clothing This is a research site for those interested in clothing for
men
and women from the 1630s-early 1700s. Covers both men's and women's
fashions, including hair styles. http://www.kipar.org/costumes.html 18th Century Historical Williamsburg: Clothing This site discusses men's, women's and children's clothing
for
18th century wearing at Williamsburg. http://www.colonialwilliamsburg.com/history/clothing/index.cfm Baroque Costume Images Collection of lovely images from period paintings http://ashbaugh.freeservers.com/photo5.html Stitching and Seam Techniques Seen on Various 18th Century Garments This is a lovely description of sewing techniques, with documentation as to which garments they have been found used on. This is a pdf file, so you will need Adobe Reader. http://www.nwta.com/patterns/pdfs/134stitch.pdf Eighteenth Century Stays Great closeup of a very nice set of stays with some discussion. http://www.nwta.com/patterns/pics/ebaystays/ebaystays.html Regency Austentation This is an interesting collection of Regency era references http://austentation.tripod.com/home.html Jessamyn's Regency Costume Companion This is another one of those MUST visit sites for those doing Regency era research. Men's and women's clothing, pattern information, pics and other useful things. http://www.songsmyth.com/costumerscompanion.html A Regency Era Primer A bit about background, with pictures and links for both men and women's fashions. http://members.aol.com/wemakehistory/Reg1.html The Regency Fashion Page I like the regency period. This is the period mostly between
around 1820-1830. This is the time of Jane Austin, all of those
wonderful Georgette Heyer novels I used to read as a girl, the period
of Jacksonian America that saw such an expansion to the west. Well, if
you are like me, you will love
to look at this site. The Regency Fashion Page makes an attempt to draw
together fashion resources for this period for both men and women's
fashions. http://locutus.ucr.edu/~cathy/reg3.html Victorian The Costume Gallery's Online Library:1800s Costume References This is a nice collection of links, some unique to the
Costume
Gallery on a variety of women's fashion issues for the 1800s. http://www.costumegallery.com/1800.html Clothing Bibliography for Victorian fashions, 1840-1865 This is put together by Vicki Betts, a tireless and giving
researcher
who is an active poster on the CW-Reenactor's List.
